Have you ever bought a shirt in size M from one brand, only to find that the same size feels completely different somewhere else? You’re definitely not alone. Clothing sizes can vary widely between brands, countries, and even collections from the same company. But why is that—and how can you make sense of it all? Here’s what you need to know.

No Universal Standard—And That’s Where the Confusion Starts

One of the main reasons clothing sizes differ so much is that there’s no single global standard. Each country—and often each brand—uses its own measurement system and definitions of what a size 6, 8, or medium actually means.

In the United States, sizes are typically based on a combination of body measurements and historical conventions, while Europe and the UK use different numbering systems. For example, a US size 6 roughly corresponds to a UK size 10 and an EU size 38—but even that can vary depending on the brand.

On top of that, many companies adjust their sizing to fit their target audience. A brand aimed at younger shoppers might design slimmer, more fitted clothing, while one focused on comfort may offer looser cuts. The result? Two garments labeled the same size can fit very differently.

“Vanity Sizing”—When Numbers Become a Marketing Tool

Another factor behind inconsistent sizing is “vanity sizing.” This is when brands intentionally make garments larger than the size label suggests, so customers feel better about the number they’re wearing.

For instance, someone who used to wear a size 10 might suddenly fit into an 8 in a particular brand. That small psychological boost can make shoppers more likely to buy. Over time, however, this practice has made size labels even less reliable.

Differences Between Men’s, Women’s, and Children’s Sizes

Sizing systems also differ by gender and age group.

  • Women’s sizes are often based on bust, waist, and hip measurements, but the actual fit can vary dramatically depending on the cut and style.
  • Men’s sizes tend to be more measurement-based, especially for shirts and pants, which are often labeled by neck size, waist, and inseam in inches.
  • Children’s sizes are usually based on height or age (for example, “6–7 years”), but since kids grow at different rates, these labels can be misleading.

That’s why it’s always smart to check a brand’s size chart before buying—especially when shopping online.

International Differences—From the US to Europe and Asia

When you shop internationally, the differences become even more noticeable.

  • US sizes (e.g., 2, 4, 6, 8) are common in North America.
  • UK sizes (e.g., 6, 8, 10, 12) are typically two numbers higher than US sizes.
  • EU sizes (e.g., 34, 36, 38, 40) are based on body measurements in centimeters.
  • Asian sizes are often smaller than US or European ones, reflecting different average body proportions.

That means a US 6 might be a UK 10, an EU 38, or an Asian L—but only approximately. There’s no perfect conversion, so it’s best to try things on or rely on detailed measurement charts.

How to Find the Right Fit

Even though sizing systems can be confusing, there are a few simple ways to make shopping easier:

  1. Know your measurements – Use a measuring tape to record your bust/chest, waist, and hips (and inseam for pants).
  2. Check the size chart – Most online stores provide detailed guides showing which measurements match their sizes.
  3. Read reviews – Other shoppers often mention whether an item runs small, large, or true to size.
  4. Stick with brands you know – Once you find labels that fit your body well, shopping becomes much simpler.
  5. Pay attention to fabric – Cotton can shrink, while materials with stretch (like spandex) offer more flexibility.

The Future: Toward More Accurate Sizing

Many clothing companies are now working to make sizing more transparent. Some are experimenting with 3D body scanning and virtual fitting rooms that show how clothes will look based on your exact measurements. Others offer “custom fit” options, tailoring garments to your specific body shape.

While a universal sizing standard may still be a long way off, the fashion industry is moving toward greater precision and clarity—good news for both consumers and the environment, since fewer returns mean less waste.

Conclusion: Sizes Are Guidelines, Not Rules

At the end of the day, clothing sizes are just rough indicators. They can give you a general idea of fit, but they’re far from absolute. The key is to know your own body, use size charts, and not get too hung up on the number on the tag.

Once you find the brands and cuts that suit you best, shopping becomes a lot more enjoyable—whether you’re browsing in New York, ordering from London, or exploring online boutiques in Seoul.
